Artist Biography - Susan Bayard Whiting

In this stressful life I hope that through my landscapes and figure work to convey to the public a sense of peace and joy. Peace through the stunningly gorgeous landscapes of both Florida and of the timeless beauty of our main studio in the Adirondack region of New York State. Joy, I hope, is conveyed through the series “Beach Babies” which are captures of children’s endless energy and unbridled imagination as they play on the wonderful beaches on the Treasure Coast.

I currently produce work both plein air and in studio work employing both alma prima and indirect painting methods. As a contemporary artist I enjoy the works of so many nineteenth century Impressionist artists such as Camille Corot and Pissaro. Their use of color to convey atmosphere and their color harmonies are what drove me to paint. Studying the bold brush work of John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt had provided me with an understanding for the use of color and allows me to use my training as a draftsman and technical illustrator to achieve the desired effect in my paintings. I am currently working on portraits by commission.
